A system of therapy founded by Andrew Taylor Still (1828 – 1917) and based on the theory that the body is capable of making its own remedies against disease and other toxic conditions when it is in normal structural relationship and has favourable environmental conditions and adequate nutrition. It utilizes generally accepted physical, medicinal, and surgical methods of diagnosis and therapy, while placing chief emphasis on the importance of normal body mechanics and manipulative methods of detecting and correcting faulty structure. (Dorland`s Medical Dictionary, 28th Ed, 1994)
Generally, the patient should be able to sit and rest in the waiting room five minutes or so before treatment. This allows them to settle down, unwind and start to enable their body to be more receptive to mechanical work.
For new patients a full case history will be taken and any prior examinations, x-rays etc. will be taken into consideration. After the history the patient will be asked to change down to their undergarments to allow us to look at the presenting problem. (For patients that feel uncomfortable about standing in underwear etc. feel free to wear shorts and a baggy t-shirt and we can work around the area). The patient will than be asked to undertake some movement to gather information on posture and any restrictions that may be present.
A detailed passive examination will be done and the diagnosis will be discussed. It is at this stage that treatment will begin.
Using gentle soft tissue and manipulation the body’s framework is carefully encouraged to return to its correct structure. At ‘The House’ we have two osteopaths using techniques ranging from the ‘classical’ approach to cranial sacral manipulation. The full structure is taken into account and although you may present with headaches it may be coming from a shoulder of pelvic imbalance.
